Occitania? Discover in a few words this "new" Occitania?
"You are probably already familiar with the 'new' administrative region Occitania...
As a result of the territorial reform of 2014, today's Occitania is the result of the merger of the former Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions. It has 13 departments: Ariège (09), Aude (11), Aveyron (12), Gard (30), Haute Garonne (31), Gers (32), Hérault (34), Lot (46), Lozère (48), Hautes Pyrénées (65), Pyrénées Orientales (66), Tarn (81), Tarn et Garonne (82).
Neighbouring New Aquitaine to the west, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to the east, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to the north, bordering Spain and Andorra to the south, Occitania is based on the southern part of the Massif Central and the northern slope of the Pyrenees and benefits from 215 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline.
Occitania is the second largest region in metropolitan France in terms of surface area (72,724 km²) and the fifth largest in terms of population (5,744,185). The Canal des Deux Mers crosses it, a combination of the Canal du Midi (built by Paul Riquet in the 17th century between Toulouse and the Etang de Thau) and the Canal Latéral à la Garonne (built in the 19th century as far as Toulouse).
The population is unevenly distributed between two major metropolises, Toulouse, the prefectural capital, and Montpellier, a moderately populated Mediterranean coastline and more deserted rural areas.
Its geographical location (close to the sea, average and high mountains) coupled with its climate, which benefits from plenty of sunshine, makes it an attractive and privileged region.
With eight sites classified by UNESCO, 4500 historical monuments, 2 National Parks, 1 Natural Marine Park, 6 Regional Natural Parks, Occitania has something to suit everyone's tastes. Numerous traditional and regional features in several fields complement its touristic appeal.
Occitania has been, for several years, one of the regions of France with the highest demographic growth.
Part of "old" medieval Occitania...
It is a large part of medieval Occitania which covered the south of France (except the Basque Country and Roussillon), the Spanish Val d'Aran and the Italian Occitan Valleys.
Most of its territory (95%) is located in the centre of cultural Occitania, hence its strong bond with the Occitan identity. It shares some of the same features as the former Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions.
